Frequently Asked Questions:
What Is Macramé?
Macramé is a textile craft made from specialist macramé cords (also called macramé rope or yarn) using creative knotting techniques to tie the cords. Macramé often uses decorative fringing as well as macramé accessories, such as macramé beads, rings and dowels to structure and decorate the pieces.
Macramé has a very interesting history and has existed in some form for centuries. The technique of decorating costumes with fringing, can be traced back as far as Babylonian times. Over time, the popularity of macramé has waxed and waned a little according to social trends. However, we're delighted to see this beautiful craft enjoying a well-deserved revival, thanks to a plethora of online tutorials as well as beautiful macramé blogs providing a wealth of creative inspiration. Find out more about the history of macramé in our 'beginner's guide to macramé' blog post.
Is Macramé Easy To Learn?
If you're new to macramé, this is a great craft for beginners! Macramé is very accessible, as you can learn at your own pace and within whatever free time you have available. There's a whole range of quick and simple projects you can do, to try your hand at macramé and practise the key knotting techniques. Once you're feeling more confident, you can move onto more elaborate, large scale pieces such as wall hangings. Macramé is also a very affordable craft to do – you just need a few basic supplies to get started, so you don't need to make a great financial investment upfront! Learn more about getting started with macramé in our 'beginner's guide to macramé'.
What Do I Need To Do Macramé?
To make your macramé piece you just need a suitable macramé cord for your project, along with some tools to help you. We recommend using a macramé board to secure your macramé piece as you work, using some T pins. This will ensure you can knot your work securely and neatly, without feeling like you need 3 pairs of hands! You'll also need a tape measure to accurately measure your cords and a good, sharp pair of scissors to snip those ends and trim any fringe work.
