Frequently Asked Questions:

What Is Macramé?

Macramé is a craft made by tying specialist macramé cords (also called macramé rope or yarn) using decorative knotting techniques. The art of tying decorative knots can be traced as far back as Babylonian times, when fringing and knotting was first seen adorning period clothing. However, the craft of macramé as we recognise it, truly came into its own during the 13th century, when Arabian weavers began incorporating decorative knots and fringes into textiles. This technique was carried along the trade routes into Europe and its prevalence developed over the following centuries. By the Victorian era, macramé was enjoying a great deal of popularity, featured in dedicated guides and being regarded as an on–trend style. Its true to say that the popularity of macramé has waxed and waned a little, however today it is as popular as its ever been – thanks to a wealth of online inspiration and step-by-step guides making it a very accessible & creative craft. Read more on the fascinating history of macramé in our 'beginner's guide to macramé'.

Is Macramé Easy To Learn?

Macramé is a great craft for beginners as it's very accessible and only needs a small investment in a handful of low-cost materials to get started! As a beginner you can learn at your own pace, picking short and simple projects such as a coaster or key fob to practise the key knotting techniques. As you learn and wish to try more elaborate pieces, you can move on to more complex techniques. Macramé is a craft you can easily pick up and do, whenever you have a moment of spare time as it doesn't require a lot of setting up. To get started you just need to pick your first project & buy your cord, along with a few, affordable tools. Head over to our 'beginner's guide to macramé' to learn more!

What Do I Need To Do Macramé?

To get started, you just need the correct width of macramé cord for your project, plus a few essential tools. Here's a quick guide to selecting the right size cord for your piece –

1.5 – 3mm cord: Ideal for small scale & delicate pieces like jewellery, coasters, Christmas tree decorations and purses.
3 – 5mm cord: This size works well for medium size projects such as planters, small wall hangings and shopping bags.
4 – 7mm cord: This wider cord is suitable for large scale pieces like bigger wall hangings and backdrops.

We recommend securing your macramé project to a macramé board with T pins. This will ensure your piece remains tidy and help you tie the knots neatly and securely. You'll also need a tape measure to accurately measure your cords, along with a good, sharp pair of scissors to neatly snip cord ends and fringes. Otherwise, your project may call for some macramé accessories, such as rings, beads and dowels. Our macramé collection has a great range of accessories to suit your project, including a fantastic 39 piece macramé accessory kit with a selection of beads, dowels, rings and more to choose from.
