How to Make a Patchwork Cushion

How to Make a Simple Patchwork Cushion for new sewers...

If you are new to patchwork and are looking for a nice and easy project to start you off, below I will talk you through the basics of making your first patchwork cushion, using 10x10cm squares and a co-ordinating fabric for the back. Look for this in our fabric by the metre section.

This is also a great starter project for children, as the process is simple, but the result looks really professional if done carefully or with help!

Follow these eight simple steps:

Resources/equipment required:

  • Tape measure
  • Pins
  • Sewing Machine
  • x25 10x10xm patchwork squares
  • 1m of fabric or two 1/2 metre pieces
  • Matching sewing thread
  • Matching bias binding (optional)

Step one:

Cut two rectangles, 28cm x 42cm for the back (for an envelope fastening) and lay out 25 of your favourite 10x10cm squares in a pleasing pattern.

You can view our full sample of patchwork squares here.

Step two:

Pin and stitch the squares together, right sides together, in rows of 5, allowing approx 1/2cm seam allowance.

Step three:

Press open seams on the wrong side.

Step four:

With the seams matching, pin and stitch, right sides together the five rows. Take 1cm seam allowance.

Step five:

Press open seams on the wrong side.

Step six:

Take the two back pieces and press and stitch along one of the long sides on each piece. You want to create one neat seam on the right side on each back piece.

You could add matching bias binding on these edges if you wish.

TIP: to make binding easier to sew on neatly, press first!

Step seven:

Lay your back pieces and front patchwork piece right sides together. Ensure the two back pieces are overlapping to create your envelope fastening. Pin and stitch all the way around the edge of the cushion.

Step eight:

Turn the right way around and press. Insert a 40cm cushion inner.

My choice would be:

Blue and pink patchwork squares with a pink gingham back.
